Always rented a car and loved driving around. We always moved around every few days. We are now looking for ideas on 2 weeks this August. Perhaps a week in two different places.
We would definitely go back to Rome this time. We would like to drive a lot of day trips from our home base. Any thoughts on areas. Are there towns or areas that I have missed that I should see. I was thinking north of Rome, Tuscany Umbria? I would appreciate your thoughts. We are 2 adults and 2 adult children. Like to drive and see new things.
We do like the small towns but also like the big cities. Umbria or Tuscany would fit the bill I think. Florence is a bigger city relatively speaking and of course Rome. Another big city you might enjoy is Bologna.
It is a university town but full of history, and miles of lovey porticoes. Perugia in Umbria is also a city but I have not been so cannot speak from experience. I would pick a spot near Perugia as a base to explore Umbria and a spot near Siena for Tuscany. I would stay near Siena and visit :. I would consider a few things. Ease of parking car , cost of parking car and close-by conveniences. You cannot drive inside most of the hill towns, if not all. You did not mention cost, so I will suggest a few places we have worked from.
Do you have airline tickets yet? For Tuscany and Umbria , you could actually fly in and out of Rome. To get over your jet lag, spend the first 2 nights in Rome and then head out for Tuscany. On the way, just off the A1 is Orvieto. This charming hilltown just spreads itself across a hilltop with dramatic drops on all sides. You can consider staying in Pienza , Montpulciano, Gaiole in Chianti , or etc. There are many choices of these smaller walled towns that offer nice places to stay, with parking options.
