Finney as a result of the rampant crime and disparity in the Five Points District. Realizing the need for innovation, the most important goal of the Society dealt with prostitution. The Society initially aimed at prevention. They believed that prostitution created a very negative path that women fell into because of poverty and desperation. Because the area was in such poverty, many women turned to prostitution as a last resort and found the job to be much better paying than what they had been doing before.
In addition to preventing prostitution, the Society also aimed at fighting their male counterparts that encouraged prostitution and frequented brothels. As they progressed, they realized that prevention was not the only way to go about their mission.
They began to focus more on helping those who were already wrapped up in the profession of prostitution. They attempted to provide alternate means of work for the girls and also gave them support when they needed it. In addition they began providing education to girls who wanted to better themselves and get out of the lifestyle that they were in.
In addition, several magazines supported by the Society, such as The Advocate published articles detailing what ideal men and women should look like in addition to advice on how to spot a man who frequents brothels in an attempt to dissuade people from going there.
