Those are apartment buildings that will soon be full of successful business-class families. What you are observing is suburbanization, Korean style. There are over a dozen apartment buildings surrounding our academy that are currently under construction. I feel bad for the teachers who end up replacing us. To some, this could be seen as an incredible success story.
However, it can also get quite ridiculous. It makes me wonder if I would even recognize Mokpo if I came back here in 10 years. It seems to permeate throughout all aspects of Korean life. If you get into a taxi, prepare to accelerate towards upcoming red lights just so the driver can get to the intersection sooner. Yet, for all the emphasis there is on getting things done, there seems to be an equal and opposite emphasis on foresight.
The best example I can think of is when Lindsey and I went to Oedaldo last fall.
