We are going on our first trip to Funchal at the beginning of September and I was wondering if someone could tell me the best places to go in Funchal in the evening? We will mostly eat in the hotel, as its included, but then tend to prefer to go out to nice bars, etc so any advice would be appreciated. Also the average costs of the wine and beer would be good to know as well. Fado: bars Espirito? The Casino show if you like that kind of thing. Nothing wrong, easy on the ear but unadventuorus.
Most Hotel entertainment is quite dated. My advice is to go into Funchal and enjoy the bars and clubs. Our favourite is the FX club with salsa wednesdays and saturdays check out another topic "Reassurance" where you can eat outside and be entertained. The best entertainment is where the locals go but the best places dont get going until at least pm.
Copacabana doesnt get going until about 1am but its worth the effort going! Think it is a matter of opinion to say Arsenios is in a resistable area , personally would not agree. Neither would I ,algarve addict! What on earth is wrong wth that part of the old town? Yes it's busy,crowded with tourists and locals alike. And for some of us we saw that area the minute we walked out of our hotel.. We remove posts that do not follow our posting guidelines, and we reserve the right to remove any post for any reason.
There was a time ,in a not too distant past,when this zone was peopled not only by most of the"out and about",addicts and prostitutes so ,Regmaiche may have a point there. Recent measures,however have been steadily implemented that are bringing a new life to the area. It remains to be seen if the actions will come entirely to fruition. There are still "dark spots" Do you know what really annoys me sometimes - people on the forum commenting on beggers,run down areas, prostitution etc as if Madeira is the only place to suffer!!
A few months age someone imlpied not to use a certain area because people were being given food, holmeless etc. Well I have to say that Madeira is no differant in this respect to any other Country, and in many ways deals with it much better, especially UK.
